On November 17, we wrote a piece on the Amazon Kindle Fire and its potential to compete with Apple’s iPad. Although speculative at the time, the early numbers suggested Amazon had created a worthy product at a price point that was achieving early sales success. Now with the holiday season over, we finally have an idea of where the Kindle Fire stands. PCWorld reports the Kindle Fire helped Amazon set a holiday sales record. In that time span, it is believed the Kindle Fire sold between 4 and 5 million units! Furthermore, CNET published an article yesterday claiming its success is eating into iPad sales:

“As a result, the Kindle Fire took away “maybe 1 [million to] 2 million” iPad sales, McCourt said.

And compared to the previous (sequential) quarter, revenue generated from the iPad will be down. “We expect iPad revenues to generate 21.3 percent of revenues in the December quarter for Apple, up from 17.2 percent in the year-ago period, although down from 24.3 percent in the previous quarter,” McCourt wrote.”

Although the iPad is seen by many as a superior product, customer reviews have been very favorable for the Kindle Fire (3.9 of 5 stars based on over 10,000 reviews on Amazon). It’s appearing that for most people, a few less bells and whistles are worth the $300 price difference.

RJS is giving away an Amazon Kindle Fire on January 31st to one of our Facebook fans! Become a fan and you could win the hottest new tech toy!
