To all the many wonderful mothers out there … Happy Mother’s Day. Gentleman and kids, don’t forget to send a card and some flowers!

Our first Friday Fun Link visualizes the incredibly stunning effect our humanity has had on Earth. This amazing video by Globaia is a “tour of our glowing transportation and communication networks” and “shows the majesty–and horror–of how mankind has altered the planet.”

We’ve all heard of the popular mobile app, Instagram, but have you downloaded Postagram yet for your Smartphone? Simply snap a photo and use Postagram to turn your picture into an actual postcard … which they even mail for you … all for just a dollar!

Who doesn’t like a good stop-motion video? Indie-folk artist, Hudson, used the popular technique for their recent single, “Against the Grain.” The impressive music video uses 920 pencils and 5,125 images!

Finally, here’s a humorous informational video from IBM that dates back to 1956. In the video, they show off a device called the RAMAC. It’s the world’s first hard disk, is the size of a refrigerator and can store … wait for it … 5 megabytes! Isn’t it amazing how far we’ve come?

And how great is this vintage advertisement for a 10MB hard disk, too?

May the 4th be with you … and a happy Friday!

We kick off today’s Friday Fun Links with ESPN’s list of the “Best Paid Athletes by Sport for 2011.” We all know Kobe Bryant and Alex Rodriguez make plenty of bank each year, but what about Joey Chestnut, the professional eater or Kane Waselenchuk, the Canadian racquetball champion? The list is actually quite interesting and has me tempted to take up badminton, where I’ll try to beat Lee Chong Wei and earn his $267,350 salary!

This Friday we’re having a little spring fun by celebrating the 2nd Annual RJS Office Mini-Golf Classic. The entire 9-hole course takes place in the offices, meeting rooms, hallways and cubes of RJS Software.

This year, the holes are especially difficult and include rubber duckies, a Hot Wheels track, water hazards, camping gear, roughly 584 Mountain Dew cans and the mouths of our executive team.  Take a look!

I hope Joel kept you all informed while I was away on vacation. Luckily, I’ve been stocking up a few good Friday Fun Links for you all!

NASA’s space shuttle, Discovery, took its last flight this week before its final rest at the National Air and Space Museum in Virginia. National Geographic was lucky enough to receive an unprecedented look inside the ship and snapped two-dozen, high-definition, 360-degree photographs of the iconic vessel. Lucky for us, we also get the opportunity to check out the spacecraft by zooming in and out of the incredible pictorial tour.

After several years of successful growth as a part of RJS Software, RJS Smart Security branched off as its own business unit in December of 2011. With that step came the need for a website to share our unique story.

Today we launched www.rjssmartsecurity.com. Most importantly, this site shares our thoughts on practicing smart document and data protection via our “Lean Security” methodology. If you’re in need of PCI or HIPAA assistance, help buidling an iron-clad security strategy, or a product that can solve your encryption needs, don’t hesitate to give our RJS Smart Security team a call!

RJS Smart Securityhas finally arrived! Check out our new security website - www.rjssmartsecurity.com - and let us know what you think!

The future of mobile

About a month ago, I wrote about the decreasing level of American innovation. My theory was if we are to change our worrisome course of diminishing creativity, we should put our full attention toward the mobile market and “own it” so to speak.

Just last week, Henry Blodget, CEO of Business Insider, presented “The Future of Mobile” at a conference in San Francisco. Here’s a little about the presentation:

“To kick off the conference, our BI Intelligence team—Pascal-Emmanuel Gobry, Alex Cocotas, and I—put together a deck on the current trends in mobile. We looked closely at the growth of smartphones and tablets, the platform wars, and how consumers are actually using their devices.”

The slide deck is packed with graphs and data cohesively illustrating what we all know … mobile is here, it’s here to stay and it’s going to be bigger than we can even imagine. If you don’t think this is an exploding market with huge growth potential, look at the graph below.

It’s Friday and you know what that means! Hopefully your bracket is still looking strong; mine certainly isn’t. I’ll be cheering for underdogs the rest of the way. Who will be this year’s George Mason or VCU?

This Sunday marks the return of the hit television show, Mad Men … its first episode in 17 months! In honor of the long-awaited season five premiere, Newsweek ran a special issue with all of their advertisements designed in a retro vibe. The Allstate and Dunkin’ Donuts ads are my favorites. And if you’re planning on watching the two-hour premiere, but are a bit foggy on what happened in season four, here’s a recap for you!

The fall of big paper

Last week, Venkatesh Rao, a contributor for Forbes, wrote a well-researched article called, “The End of Pax Papyra and the Fall of Big Paper.” The central premise of the piece is that the paperless office, after years and years of waiting, has finally arrived.

We would agree. In the last two years, we’ve had more paperless process automation leads come through the door than the five years prior combined. What’s particularly interesting about the customer prospects walking through our door is they fall under two camps:

1. Company X has been looking to automate a process for several years, but the timing finally makes sense because technology has improved so dramatically that “going paperless” is simply the logical next step.

2. Company Y is a small business and needs to run operations rather lean. With the ability to utilize both web-based and mobile technology, embracing a paperless model via the cloud is not only more affordable, but incredibly smart.

So how did we finally get here after the paperless office doomsday was first discussed back in the 1970′s?
