Happy Friday! I consider it fortunate that there’s a small lake near the RJS headquarters that I can walk around if I need to clear my head, blow off some steam or just get a little exercise over lunch.

It was quite a coincidence, then, that the day I used a pedometer to track the distance around the lake (1.6 miles) and had openly wondered to a colleague why more people weren’t out for a walk, I came across an interesting Slate.com article about the crisis of pedestrianism in the United States.

The article points out the Americans walk the least of any industrialized nation. Studies show, the article said, that the average Australian takes 9,695 steps per day, the average Japanese 7,168, the average Swiss 9,650, and the average American manages only 5,117 steps. No wonder we’re getting so fat!

We’re wrapping up our Movember campaign at RJS and let me tell you, the facial artistry has been impressive – moustaches, beards, goatees and everything in between! Nearly the entire staff of RJS men have donated their faces and have collected donations in the name of men’s health awareness.

This Wednesday, the women of RJS will be selecting their favorite moustachioed man of the office and the competition promises to be fierce. Although the title will be hotly contested, every participant will be a winner as RJS is making a donation to the cause for each contestant. Before and after photos will be posted later this week, but here’s a sneak peek of one of our salesmen, Bill Whalen!

You can also support our initiative by visiting our team page and making a small contribution. The funds raised are directed to programs run directly by Movember and their men’s health partners, the Prostate Cancer Foundation and LIVESTRONG, the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

About Movember:
During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in the US and around the world. With their Mo’s, these men raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men. For the month of November, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo-growing efforts. Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November. Through their actions and words they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

Two RJSers celebrate 10 years

Despite growing pains, development changes and a challenging economy, RJS has accumulated a strong core of individuals in its 21 years. A sign of a good company is the length at which employees stick around and today I’d like to honor two of our team members who reached an impressive plateau recently – a decade of service.

Rachael Molstrom joined RJS Software Systems in 2001 as a receptionist and member of the finance department. Rachael quickly became educated on our products and added first-level support to her many hats as well. As RJS expanded, Rachael was promoted to Office Manager and coordinated the big move into our current office space. With RJS now hitting record numbers for current document management projects, Rachael is now assisting the sales team as a Project Manager, too. Rachael’s knowledge of RJS products, organizational skills, customer-orientation and team mentality make her a great fit at RJS.

Brad Schubert also joined RJS in 2001. As a sales clerk at Office Max, Brad sold Richard not just a new office printer, but his professional talents as well! Fresh out of high school, Brad learned both on the job and in the class room, splitting his time between customer support and college courses. In his ten years, Brad has helped the company in several ways by serving as one of our key technical support assistants, designing one of our first websites and leading product development on DeliverNow, our report delivery solution. Not only is Brad technically savvy, but he has a firm understanding of our products and customers and plays an integral role in our success.

RJS Pig Roast

RJS believes in the philosophy, “work hard to play hard.” Each month, we take a break from the daily routine to reward employees for their dedication to their craft. Whether it is office mini golf or an employee car wash, we always like to keep things light and interesting.

We also plan bi-annual celebrations for the families of employees. This August, we went to a park near RJS headquarters for an old-fashioned pig roast. Canoeing, swimming, games and a competitive volleyball tournament were also big hits that day.

Meet Charlie! Our summer pig roast was a huge hit and was a lunch leftover favorite the entire week after the picnic.

Who says computer nerds aren’t athletic? RJSers take part in the inaugural sand volleyball tournament.

We do not think it is a coincidence that our company’s output and growth has directly coincided with upper management’s decision to make employee rewards a key component of the RJS vision.
